914 All Aluminum LS Series V-8 Conversion

Some may say that we saved the best for last! After driving a fuel injected LS V-8 powered 914, I may be inclined to agree.

When Renegade made the choice to experiment with the all aluminum LS-series of engines from GM, it was an exciting new adventure that had a promising future. None of us knew that this extraordinary V-8 power plant would ultimately change our business plan forever. ( picture )

Our first platform that seemed best suited for the lighter, stronger, more reliable LS-series engines, was the 944. Available beginning in '99, this conversion kit quickly became our #1 seller. The 911 was next, and popularity of the injected LS-series package has recently eclipsed the Small Block Chevy choice for 911 owners. Then the heavier 928 benefited greatly with the lighter, simpler, and more reliable LS-series engines. And finally, the 914 got a chance to try this amazing V-8. Let me tell you how it happened!

In early 2007, while perfecting the 911 LS series conversion kit, Renegade secretly engineered and tested the first LS series V-8 in an empty 914 shell. This particular "build" was a contract job for a corporate client so we were not able to drive the completed car. Mid '08 brought two customers to our door looking for V-8 914 in-house conversions, and both were really excited to learn that we had a lighter, fuel injected, all aluminum alternative. ( picture )

Then came the question of how to take this new, very powerful V-8, and soften the torque a little to increase the life of a stock 914 transaxle, and keep the tires from roasting to the cords in three out of five gears! The idea came from our good friends at Turn Key Engine Supply in Oceanside California. They said they could take the 5.7L block and install the 4.8L crank for a de-stroked, higher revving, "screamer" of an engine. ( picture )

Now it's early '09 and both our customer's 914s are nearing completion after a full ground up restoration and engine conversion using this revolutionary new Turn Key LS-series package. Coming from a professional racecar driver's perspective, this is truly the most fantastic vision anyone could imagine for the investment. The polar moment (the ability to change the car's direction) is effortless. The center of gravity is planted firmly under your hips. The power is immediate and exhilarating, yet the driveability is docile and completely tame. The exhaust note is pleasing to the ear without sounding just like another souped up Chevy. Basically, if you took the lighter and more delicate characteristics of our Subie or stock air-cooled 914, and coupled that with the brute torque of a Small Block Chevy, you would find our new LS series 914 V-8 conversions!!! A little more about the engine... Maybe you like the idea of a carburetor but seek the weight savings of the all aluminum LS engine? Or maybe your local salvage yard has an LS series long block available for cheap!!! Thanks to Edelbrock and MSD, they have teamed together to build an intake and ignition system specifically for the LS-series. Edelbrock has developed an intake that will replace the composite FI unit and allows for the installation of a four-barrel carburetor. Plus MSD has used their expertise to manufacture an ignition control system that uses the stock individual coil packs on the factory LS engines. Together, these clever creations eliminates the need for the GM computer or custom harness, and makes the Renegade LS-series 914 engine conversion even easier yet.

Another option may indeed be the most popular as mentioned above. Renegade Hybrids, and Turn Key Engine Supply, have teamed up to develop a specific engine package for each of our new LS-series conversions including the 914. $2450 (core required) REBUILT 914 TRANSAXLE WITH TALLER (FREEWAY) GEARS: While your transaxle may be used in stock form in a V8 application, rebuilding with taller gears provides better gear ratios for V8 powered cars. Your transaxle will be completely rebuilt unlike many shops that claim they will do the complete job. We block off 1st gear, as it is a very weak gear and not needed for V8 applications, then we replace 3rd, 4th and 5th with taller gears. Your new 4 speed trans will have excellent gear ratios and terrific drivability. Cruising at 70 mph in the original 5th gear (now your new tall 4th gear) your rpm will be about 2,500 verses the 3,300 with the stock gears. Another advantage of the taller gears...your fuel economy will improve. You should gain at least 5 mpg. NOTE: If early trans (pre '72) additional charge required for upgrade to the later side shift setup.
